Unity Hymn, 2023
Multimedia Installation; Visual data of quantum computer in CNC-milled relief, sonification of data, speakers, mixer, projection, steel
The piece is part of the project “Unity (0 and 1 at once)” where technology and mysticism meet in an attempt to approach the essence of existence. This speculative mysticism is inspired by experiments in quantum computing that are currently taking place at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. Conventional computers are built around binary digits (bits) that must either be on or off: 0 or 1. In a quantum computer, the quantum bits or ‘qubits’ have the ability to be in both states at once. This audio-visual piece presents a translation of the data of the quantum computer into sound. In that way the mystery of the quantum computer can be looked at and listened to at the same time. Inspired by synaesthesia theory, each pixel is transformed into a note. In the same way that the quantum computer is 0 and 1 at once, two notes are played at once. A feedback-loop between the two notes creates the unified noise. See documentation video below.
